Abstract

Introduction: The purposes of this research were to 1) develop a training program on the use of statistics for health research for academic supporting staff in the Faculty of Medicine, Thammasat University; 2) study the results from implementation of the training program; and 3) investigate the satisfaction of the participants toward the training program.

Method: The sample used in the study was 30 academic supporting staffs in the Faculty of Medicine, Thammasat University, in 2014 academic year selected by voluntarily participation in the project. The research instrument was a test of knowledge before and after the training using 20 multiple choice questions. The data were analyzed by using percentage, mean, standard deviation and comparison of means.

Result: The research results were as follows. The training program comprised of principles and rationale, objectives, structure, activities, materials and assessment of the training program. Regarding the implementation results considered from the analysis of participants, scores, it was found that the means
after the training of unit 1 “sample size calculations” and unit 2 “selection of appropriate statistics for research.” were increased at 1.53 and 3.13 respectively. The mean after the training on the topic of “sample size calculations” was not different (p = 0.129) while the mean after the training on the topic of “selection of appropriate statistics to the sample size” was different with statistical significance at the level of 0.05 and the evaluation of the training program revealed that the average satisfaction of participants toward the training program was at the high level.

Discussion and Conclusion: Academic supporting staff in the Faculty of Medicine, Thammasat University should be trained in topic of sample size calculations for research.
